Regarding prescription regulation: I have to see a psychiatrist every single month because they're not allowed to prescribe more than one month's worth of ADHD medication.

This is a great piece! I had no idea about the ANCU drug classification, WOW!

Timely, too. I was at a "One Year of Abundance" event with Derek Thompson last night, and one of his remarks was that Abundance was initially conceived after he and Ezra Klein noticed pandemic-era shortages of materials like masks, ventilators, testing equipment, as well as state capacity problems.

(It's fascinating that despite this, the book didn't include a chapter on healthcare.)

I couldn't help but notice that the piece, between its mention of scope of practice laws and AI augmentation of clinicians, danced around the elephant that is the length of medical school in the US. Medical school in the US takes far longer to complete in the US than it does in most nations, and the considerable debt incurred by new doctors encourages them to become specialists rather than primary care physicians...is there a reason why?
